One of the most fun parts of Christmas is hunting for the most original gifts for every member of my family.
I like trying to find presents that step outside the usual box of chocs or package of socks.

Guide to Unusual and Original Christmas Gifts
This game would be perfect for kids and cat-lovers alike and is sure to be a hit with all the family.
A fun game to play after Christmas lunch (actually maybe make that before Christmas lunch — too many sherrys might adversely affect your steady hand!).
This brilliant set (for children aged 9+) has been created by leading British calligrapher Kirsten Burke and it contains everything you need to get your child started with calligraphy.
Practising the brush strokes will really help fine-motor skills and is sure to improve attention to detail and presentation skills.
There are 13 different colours to choose from (including baby pink!).
You can pick the size most appropriate too – from babies, through young children, teenagers and even the quirky dressing adult in your life.
Personalised gifts are always extra special because they are thoughtful and unique.
The drum stick are £9.99 per pair (at time of writing) though there are bulk-buy discounts if you buy multiple sets (perfect for your local rock star band members!).
The stand also has space to hang your watch, keys and jewellery so you’ll know where to find all the most important bits in the morning rush.
It’s made with walnut veneer (so not solid walnut – not at this price!) but feels high quality and looks terrific.
We all know someone who does that “Have you seen my keys/phone/wallet/watch?” etc.
These would make a really thoughtful gift for a house proud family member; the friend that has bought a new home (or first home).
Or what about that enterprising relative who has just started their own business or got a new office? These high quality numbers would give their new premises a real touch of class.
One number is £28, one letter £32 but again there are economies of scale — save £3 if you get two numbers (for £53) etc.
This would be a terrific gift for the lover of the outdoors in your life; the person that loves camping or trips to the beach; the wilderness walker, hiker or rambler too.
This is a solid piece of kit. It can support over 130lbs in weight and it made from heavy duty iron. It’s made to last.
It’d also be ideal for a cauldron – for the Wiccan or witch in your life! (insert your own mother-in-law joke here!)
Make your child feel like a real superhero and give them a personalised cape!
These brightly coloured satin capes can be made to size and personalised with a hand-stitched initials so that your little hero can feel unique!
There are eight different colours to choose from (or you can contact the maker, if you have a special request!); and each outfit comes with the initial letter of your choice sewn into the golden star on the cape. You can add more letters too if you’d like to.
The capes are satin so beautifully high quality and you can pick which elements of the outfit you’d like from just a cape, to your own assortment of accessories from cuffs, a crown and a mask (so if you’re buying for multiple kids/siblings/niece and nephews etc. each one can have a different outfit, initial and combo).
They do them in adult sizes too… y’know… just in case.
It’s just lovely to look at though and would make a perfect coffee table decoration or ornament to bring colour to any room (not just the nursery).
They’re available in five colours: classic orange, blue, pink, purple or green.
For the uninitiated the significance of the colours is important:
- Orange — fiction
- Blue — non-fiction
- Pink — travel and adventure
- Purple — essays
- Green — crime fiction.
Now you can knowingly buy the colour most suited to the book lover in your life and pretend like you knew this all along (for more of this sort of thing, they’d also love this brilliant little book: The Book Lovers’ Miscellany).
The only challenge is coming up with something suitably amusing to put on the bag!
